Apprentice Textile Finishing Specialist
Overview
The Apprentice Textile Finishing Specialist will be trained to understand how to operate finishing machinery, ensuring production targets are met and fabrics – particularly natural fibres such as wool – are finished to precise technical specifications. This role is ideal for someone with a scientific mindset and a background in chemistry who is keen to apply their knowledge in a practical, industrial setting.
- Develop a deep understanding of the chemical and mechanical processes involved in textile finishing, especially for natural fibres like wool.
- Learn how each finishing machine operates and the science behind the processes (e.g. scouring, tentering, crop, brush, KD)
- Use the SAP system to track production orders, enter new finishing routes and amend specifications based on technical requirements.
- Support operators with Job processing whilst supporting optimisation and documenting process.
- Record, analyse and interpret production data to produce technical reports that support the process optimisation.
- Reporting SAP issues to IT team & SAP champions where appropriate
- Apply scientific reasoning to troubleshoot and resolve production issues in collaboration with the Quality Team.
- Liaise with Dyehouse and Mending departments to ensure greige pieces are properly prepared for
- Support the planning of machine downtime and maintenance using the production schedule.
- Contribute to a safe working environment by adhering to health and safety protocols.
- Strong interest in science, particularly chemistry; A-level Chemistry or equivalent is highly desirable.
- Ability to apply scientific principles to real-world manufacturing processes.
- Meticulous attention to detail and analytical thinking.
- Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Interest in textile manufacturing and natural fibre processing.
- Ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines.
- Completion of L4 Textile Technical Specialist Apprenticeship.
- Introduction to textile products and finishing routes.
- Scientific understanding of finishing processes and machinery operation.
- Overview of preliminary processes including yarn and cloth production.
- Preparation of textile pieces for processing.
- Efficiency control and production planning.
- Quality control and assurance procedures.
- Maintenance of machinery and fault diagnosis.
- Health and safety in textile manufacturing.
